Question by comet girl…DUCK!: Can someone give me step by step instructions for training my dog to behave when someone comes to the house?
He is normally such a good dog and learns so easily. The truth is, I simply don’t know how to train him to behave when he’s so excited. He barks and jumps aound and jumps up on people. Then once they come in and sit down, he’s totally in their space begging to be petted. He noses people, butts them with his head — anything to get their attention.
Please help. Thank you in advance.

Buy, borrow, steal a book on dog training, and follow it carefully.

You need to watch those Victoria Stilwell video clips. You need to make your dog/s “Sit” and stay. Takes practice.
Sometimes it’s not just the dog that needs the training, it’s the people too. The best thing to do if you have an over excited pooch (I had the same problem with both my dogs) is to ignore the dog.
I’m guessing when he’s jumping up and acting obnoxious your guests are acknowledging him in some way. This is telling him that if he behaves that way, he gets attention. You need to reverse the programming. So by ignoring him that will teach him that he only gets attention when calms down and behaves.
The best place to start is with you, when you come home, just ignore him until you get settled and then give him attention. Occasionally, you may need to bring your knee up and turn away if he’s still jumping up on you. You’re not trying to kick or hurt your dog, the knee is to just make it difficult for him to jump up on you.
Once you’re able to establish this pattern of behavior between you and your dog, you can have your guests come over and do the same thing. Eventually we will get the hint. He may still occasionally meet people at the door wagging his tail, but as long as your guests just ignore him, he won’t jump up or get into their personal space.
