Put the dog on a leash and run the leash through your beltloop. Start out in the house and do this for a long time…the dog will learn to follow you wherever you go. Once the dog does it inside, move to outside. If the dog consistently doesn’t pull on the leash then take the leash off eventually. The dog will still walk beside you out of habit.

The first thing to do is train your dog to walk beside you ON a leash. After your dog will walk beside you while on a leash, and doesn’t get distracted by other dogs or by squirrels, cats, or traffic, then you can start using lighter and lighter leashes… maybe a rope, then twine, then string, then nothing at all. It will take a long time, though, because your dog has to be 100% reliable at walking beside you on a leash – that means that no matter what, he never leaves your side.

Walk him for about an hour a day or for 30 minutes twice a day – every day. The more practice you both get at having him walk beside you, the sooner you’ll accomplish your goal!

    Good luck!

    Persistence.
Don’t give too many treats, or they will require ‘bribing’ to do as you say.
Just train until the dog does a satisfactory job on leash, and start making it obey you off leash when it understands what the commands mean.

Teach the dog to ‘heel’ or walk beside you on lead first. This is where most people make their biggest mistakes. You need to be able to do it on lead before you can attempt to do it off lead. If you try to teach off lead too soon, you cannot correct the dogs mistakes quickly and effectively. Once the dog heels, sits, stays, drops etc on lead, try it off lead. But try it off lead in a safe, secure yard!
    Good Luck!
