You have to be more assertive. use a strong stern voice. Now to teach him to sit in your stern voice say sit and push his butt down then give him a treat but do not show him the treat before he sits cause then he will get excited and wont do the trick. teach him stay after you got sitting down pat. again don’t show him the treat. tell him to sit and then say stay then walk back a few steps and bring out your treat and keep saying stay then tell him to come and give him the treat but if he didn’t stay then bring him back to the spot you told him to stay and start over only give him the treat if he does it right . if he does something wrong then hold his head gently and tap him on the snout but not to hard and in you stern voice say no! he wont learn right away so you need to have Patience and give off calm vibes to you puppy =)

Sounds like what you’re looking for is where to find some information :)

Check out the Training Levels @ http://www.sue-eh.ca
They are listing under her “writings”, and are an invaluable tool for any new dog owner.

For now, there are three ways to train your dog:

Luring – using a treat to ‘bribe’ them into a position
Shaping – slowly, progression by progression, shaping the behavior (dog thinks for itself)
Capturing – marking and rewarding a behavior offered without a command to increase the likelihood of said behaviour happening again (treating every time your dog lays down to begin ‘down’ command)
Modeling – assisting dog into position, marking and rewarding (pulling up on leash/pressing on hind end for ‘sit’)

I highly recommend looking into clicker training websites, as well. Although you may choose not to clicker train, the information found there will help you train your dog in whatever fashion suits you best.

Don’t forget, though, there is no substitute for the socialization and information gained from training classes.

    Good luck!
