Q&A: What do you think about training my dog with his regular food instead of treats?

Question by Dawg: What do you think about training my dog with his regular food instead of treats?
I’ve recently decided to train my dog (husky/chow/pit mix) with his Nutro dog food. He seems to really love the food. This morning was the first time I trained him with it. It’s not the first /lessons/ of training, however. I trained him since he was 7 weeks. Now he’s 7 months. He knows sit, stay, come, down, wait, up, off, speak, release, and ‘okay’… Of course, he only does them if there are no distractions. He does alright without treats. The only ones he’s really got down packed are ‘release’ and ‘okay’. Still workin’, though. =P So, do you think it’s a good idea to measure his food, and give it to him piece by piece as I work with him on his training? Instead of loading him with treats. I heard it’s not good to give a dog too many treats at one time… What do you think? =)
Heh, I don’t have to worry about him not looking forward to it. xD He loves it as if they actually were treats. =P Of course, I just put him on it, so maybe it will wear off, maybe not. If it does, I could just get a different dog food and use it specifically for training. =P My other dog also loves the Nutro. I thought I’d have one Hell of a time trying to get her back on dry dog food after I had been giving her fresh beef and chicken mixed with her dry food. (I was trying to get her weight back up b/c she had been starved. I rescued her from my friend’s family) But to my surprise, she loved Nutro! xP

Its highly reccomended by many dog trainers. The one we paid to train our puppy at petsmart (they really train us though) used its dog food.

Which is a better dog training method?

Question by : Which is a better dog training method?
I am looking into purchasing a training dvd set, and I can’t decide which is better. Don Sullivans perfect dog, or Cesar Millan. Has anyone used either of these? If so what was the outcome? I watched a infomercial of Don Sullivans, and it looks so harsh and abusive to me. Please help any info much appreciative. Thanks

Is there an agility club near to where you live? I would recommend you joining, as it’ll be great fun for both you and your dogs. The majority of clubs do require the dog to be over 12 months old though. [:

Looking for an answer to crate training my dog?

Question by ahren: Looking for an answer to crate training my dog?
Over the last 6 months we have been crate training our dog. The crate is the perfect size for him. Just over the last month, he has started barking almost the entire night. He has also recently started to pee a little in the back of the crate. He did fine for so long, but now it seems like a total regression. It is so hard to be happy with a dog that barks all night and pees himself. Please, does anybody have a solution?
The dog is in the other room of the house. The reason being is that allergies have arisen from other members of the household. We do take his water away 2 hours before bed and do puit him out before we go to bed. I let him out at night to pee when he first barks….but as soon as he’s back in, he starts barking again. He’s not in the crate all day, only at night. I really think it’ more of an attention thing.

Yea. Let him live outside of the box. How would you like being in jail when you did not do anything wrong.
Crate training always sounded cruel to me. Sounds like the dog agrees.
