Question by ahren: Looking for an answer to crate training my dog?
Over the last 6 months we have been crate training our dog. The crate is the perfect size for him. Just over the last month, he has started barking almost the entire night. He has also recently started to pee a little in the back of the crate. He did fine for so long, but now it seems like a total regression. It is so hard to be happy with a dog that barks all night and pees himself. Please, does anybody have a solution?
The dog is in the other room of the house. The reason being is that allergies have arisen from other members of the household. We do take his water away 2 hours before bed and do puit him out before we go to bed. I let him out at night to pee when he first barks….but as soon as he’s back in, he starts barking again. He’s not in the crate all day, only at night. I really think it’ more of an attention thing.

Yea. Let him live outside of the box. How would you like being in jail when you did not do anything wrong.
Crate training always sounded cruel to me. Sounds like the dog agrees.

Crate training can be an efficient and effective way to house train a dog. Dogs do not like to soil their resting/sleeping quarters if given adequate opportunity to eliminate elsewhere. Temporarily confining your dog to a small area strongly inhibits the tendency to urinate and defecate. However, there is still a far more important aspect of crate training.

Effectively Do Dog Training On Your Own

Getting a dog is something you should think about repeatedly. You may think your responsibilities with your pet will just be feeding them, taking them for walks or bringing them to a vet, but it does not end there. In starting out the dog training, you should teach your dog simple and basic commands. With this, you can develop a bond and let the dog learn how to receive commands and follow them. Eventually, your dog will be able to associate obeying a command with a sense of achievement, not to mention the treats he gets when he is rewarded for being obedient. Starting out with simple commands such as sit, stay, sleep, stop, or down are good when starting the training.

Crate training is essential as the next step as this would give them an idea of where to put their wastes and to respect areas of the home. Also, when the dog learns to stay on the crate, transporting your dog from one place to another will be hassle-free. Staying inside a crate also makes the dogs feel that they have a place that they can call their own when they need to rest.

Simultaneously, a dog should be house-trained or potty-trained. This is essential if you want your home to stay clean and smell clean as well. This should be repeatedly done until the dog gets it. You should be totally committed to this dog training task until you achieve your goals so that the dog would understand how important it is that they don’t do their waste disposal inside the house.

Teaching the dog not to bite is also essential. Curbing the natural instinct of the dog to bit will be difficult, especially if they are puppies and they are growing their teeth. If your dog starts to bite, reprimand it, especially when biting on furniture and other household materials. Rather than hurting it, reprimand it not by shouting but by letting it know its errors. Also, do not forget to be consistent and keep an eye on the dog.

Alongside preventing biting is about you curbing your dog’s barking. Barking is basically how a dog communicates; but if in excessive volumes, it can get pretty annoying and can disturb you neighbors as well. Therefore, it is important to learn how a dog communicates, like understanding their body posture and their faces. Allow the dog to know that you are annoyed with its barking, and reward it when it has finally stopped barking after a long period of time.

There is no easy or one quick way in dog training, but following these given steps can be essential in giving your dog the training it needs. Also, regardless if your dog follows your commands or not, remember to give it the love it deserves, because this love will always go a long way.

Question by Valin: Is it possible to crate train your dog without a crate?
i know it sounds like a dumb question but this is what i mean: i take out my puppy A LOT, when she sniffs and 10 mins after she eats/drinks. I’ve been doing this for about 3 days. Can she learn to go potty outside this way?

Yes, she can. It’s called HOUSE training. Be sure to praise her when she goes potty outside.

It’s only crate training if you are actually using the crate.

Effective Dog Training Techinques

When it comes to successfully training a dog most people have their own ideas on which method is the best. There are different ways to start dog training and when you familiarize yourself with these techniques then you can make and educated and informed decision on which method you will use.

Many trainers start training using a clicker method. Clicker training is sometimes compared to operant conditioning, which was developed by B.F. Skinner as a way of controlling behaviors through consequences. With this dog training method the trainer would click the clicker and then reward the dog with a favorite treat. Each time that the dog does something good or something that he is asked to do, the trainer would click the clicker and follow it with a reward.  The theory is that the dog will repeat behaviors that he is rewarded for.  The tricky part of clicker training is that the reward must immediately follow the correct action.

Other dog trainers prefer the crate method of training. Crate training requires a crate that caters to the size of your dog. Put the crate in a good place where you want the dog to be. Never force the dog into the crate as this will create a bad experience for him. Leave the door open on the crate and gradually try to lure your dog in. Once he enters praise him and pet him. This method is most effective for potty training a dog but can be used for other things too.  It is important to not keep the dog in the crate when you are not home.  The premise is that a dog will not go to the bathroom where he sleeps so he will hold it.  When you allow him to leave the crate and let him outside he will then go to the bathroom and can be praised and rewarded.

It is important, regardless of the method of dog training that you use, to remember to praise good behaviors as opposed to punishing bad behavior. This means that rather than punishing your dog for having an accident in the house, reward him when he does his business outside. It will not be long before your dog understands what is going on. Do the same with playing fetch, when your dog tugs on his leash, and when he barks uncontrollably. Make sure that you have some of your dog’s favorite treats handy and let the dog training begin!

It should be able to find rest and enough food and water in his crate. You should also see to it that the crate is clean and it should not be made to symbolize punishment. The dog should be afforded enough time during his crate training. This will make him relax and feel secure. Crate training is usually applied to relieve a dog’s anxiety; it is also a good housebreaking training tool.

Leash Training – this is the type of training that puts you in complete control over the dog and your dog will realize it. This training is actually meant to remove your dog’s leash issues while you are walking it. A dog will follow your commands if you can control it. The leash training also requires that your dog be made to learn to execute basic commands such as sit and wait. A dog should know how to sit and wait by your side otherwise it will keep on pulling on the leash or run around.

The Alpha Position – you are your dog’s master. You’ve got to be in complete control and authority over it, and you have to demonstrate that dominance so that your dog will follow you. Teach the dog new ways to respond to you based on this order. You should remember that it is your duty to teach your dog; it is not your dog’s obligation to learn.

Obedience Training – it is a regimen that involves both the dog and its master. This training highlights your position as alpha leader in this relationship. Dogs are obedient creatures, if it knows you are in control, although there are certain dogs having submission issues.

The Importance of Consistency

All tested dog training tips recognize and value the importance of consistency as a major factor in preserving the dog’s skills. Dogs are intelligent, no question about that, but they are not thinkers. They just respond to your stimuli.

I have a 2-year-old Cocker Spaniel and we just adopted a 10 week old puppy (border collie/lab who is already bigger than the cocker).

Anyway, we are crate training the puppy. We don’t yet have a crate for the puppy, so we are using the cocker’s crate and letting him be out at night and during the day (he is very well housetrained).

Last night, in the crate for the first time, the puppy (a border collie/lab mix who is already bigger than my cocker) was whining and yelping. We tried to ignore it, and then we tried to tell him no be quiet, but he just kept on for 5 minutes.

My cocker was sleeping next to me and ran over there a few times. Finally, he got down, laid under the bed near the crate, and issued a few low growls at the puppy. That puppy didn’t make one sound after that all night!

My dog just trained him to be quiet in the crate! Have you seen this before? Is that what he was doing? Has this got to do with being dominant or because we were upset?

So in my household my dad used to spank the dogs and show them the spot and then toss em outside. I know now this is not an effective way to train many dogs. The only other way I know is crate training. How effective is crate training, and is there anything else that might be more effective? I just want to learn some info before I get my dog. Thanks

I have a 11 month old chihuahua pup. I am having the worst time trying to train him how to use the bathroom outside. At first we used puppy pads, and he caught onto that for a while, but we just recently moved and he refuses to use the pads now. We have tried to take him out every hour, but he just goes when he pleases. He has never been in a crate. we’re not home during the day, and he has free roam over the house. Is there an alternative to crate training ?? I dont even have a crate for him. I need to know the most effective and best way to train him fast. No I will not hit my dog, so dont suggest it. My biggest concern is the time during the day when no one is at home to watch him or take him out to the bathroom. Ive never had to house break a dog before. Thanks for any help you’re able to give.

Could any of you people tell me your techniques or advice on potty training a dog?
I can’t be there for my pup 24/7 only in the mornings before school and after school (7:00am-2:30pm).. i’ll have to go with crate training. is it ok if i leave him alone during the day?
oh and do i have to start training him immediately after i get him? (i havent gotten him yet)
i know im adding alot but im concerned. if i crate him, i feel like im putting him in solitary confinement or something… i cant let him out, besides to pee, at all? how long will that go on for? and how will i let him pee every hour as needed while im at school?
