How does crate training a dog work?

Question by : How does crate training a dog work?
I gave up on this method of potty training. Apparently your dog is supposed to learn to hold the pee/poo until morning, right? Well my Pomeranian pup didn’t. I always found poo in her crate, and it’s not a big crate, it’s the right size. Should I try again putting her in the crate again? She’s 7 months and still not potty trained. Any advice?!

i dont think the purpose of a crate is for potty training. try belly bands for dogs. whenever ur dog pees say good girl or boy and so whenever u want him to pee say it again and it will trigger to pee

Looking for an answer to crate training my dog?

Question by ahren: Looking for an answer to crate training my dog?
Over the last 6 months we have been crate training our dog. The crate is the perfect size for him. Just over the last month, he has started barking almost the entire night. He has also recently started to pee a little in the back of the crate. He did fine for so long, but now it seems like a total regression. It is so hard to be happy with a dog that barks all night and pees himself. Please, does anybody have a solution?
The dog is in the other room of the house. The reason being is that allergies have arisen from other members of the household. We do take his water away 2 hours before bed and do puit him out before we go to bed. I let him out at night to pee when he first barks….but as soon as he’s back in, he starts barking again. He’s not in the crate all day, only at night. I really think it’ more of an attention thing.

Yea. Let him live outside of the box. How would you like being in jail when you did not do anything wrong.
Crate training always sounded cruel to me. Sounds like the dog agrees.

As a PhD you should’ve had at least 10 good books on dogs and their care and training.
There is no substitute for a DECENT book by a true expert.

Q&A: How do you teach an adult dog potty training?

Question by : How do you teach an adult dog potty training?
I recently adopted an adult dog from the animal shelter and she is NOT potty trained. My other two dogs are, and I’ve trained several puppies, but this is the first time I’ve gotten an adult dog that obviously has never been indoors. I’m asking for help, not suggestions to take her to a trainer. I’m trying to do this myself. Thanks :D
btw.. she’s a Great Dane.. so potty pads aren’t really an option.. she’d over flow them :)

House Training for Dummies was a huge help to me when training our dog. It covers all the how-to’s. Really, any of the answers you get will only cover the basics – this book will cover it all.
The best thing would be to start with the basics of crate training, just like you would a puppy. Old dogs can learn new tricks. But you will need to be patient. It is harder to *unlearn* a bad habit than to create a new, good one.
You will need a crate big enough for her to stand up in and turn around in. Then you will need to help her become comfortable with the crate. The basic jist is that you keep the dog in the crate when you can’t watch it and pay adequate attention to the signs that it needs to go potty. So, if you are going to be in the shower – put the dog in the crate. You take the dog out at regular intervals for potty breaks (with rewards to help establish good habits) as well as food and water breaks and time for play and walking. The goal is to help the dog be able to hold it for longer, and be reliable when out of the crate.
Tips for training: Stay calm, and never, ever punish a dog for something it did when you were not watching it. (Delayed punishment will only create distrust between you and your pooch)
Good luck!

Crate training can be an efficient and effective way to house train a dog. Dogs do not like to soil their resting/sleeping quarters if given adequate opportunity to eliminate elsewhere. Temporarily confining your dog to a small area strongly inhibits the tendency to urinate and defecate. However, there is still a far more important aspect of crate training.

how to train your dog to stay clam around visitors?

Question by AJ_Elizabeth: how to train your dog to stay clam around visitors?
i have an 8 month old male puppy and he is very hyper around visitors. Whenever somebody comes to visit he jumps on them and sometimes even bites at their clothes. We don’t like to but sometimes we have to crate him. what can we do to make him calmer and not have to crate him?

I always put my dogs into a room when the doorbell goes and it is someone that will be coming in. Tthe dogs don’t get to meet the people for a while, and then one at a time, and sometimes not at all. Not everyone wants to meet them.

I also train mine to stay put if it is a delivery arriving. They can look from a distance but not allowed by the door.

I would do what I do and put him away and then bring him out on a lead when you hear he has calmed down. See if you have a couple of willing volunteers that will help you do this by visiting deliberately for you to put some training work in. Keep him onlead so that you have control and keep your guests standing until he is behaving.

Is it possible to crate train your dog without a crate?

Question by Valin: Is it possible to crate train your dog without a crate?
i know it sounds like a dumb question but this is what i mean: i take out my puppy A LOT, when she sniffs and 10 mins after she eats/drinks. I’ve been doing this for about 3 days. Can she learn to go potty outside this way?

Yes, she can. It’s called HOUSE training. ;-) Be sure to praise her when she goes potty outside.

It’s only crate training if you are actually using the crate.

Effective Dog Training Techinques

Effective Dog Training Techinques

When it comes to successfully training a dog most people have their own ideas on which method is the best. There are different ways to start dog training and when you familiarize yourself with these techniques then you can make and educated and informed decision on which method you will use.

Many trainers start training using a clicker method. Clicker training is sometimes compared to operant conditioning, which was developed by B.F. Skinner as a way of controlling behaviors through consequences. With this dog training method the trainer would click the clicker and then reward the dog with a favorite treat. Each time that the dog does something good or something that he is asked to do, the trainer would click the clicker and follow it with a reward.  The theory is that the dog will repeat behaviors that he is rewarded for.  The tricky part of clicker training is that the reward must immediately follow the correct action.

Other dog trainers prefer the crate method of training. Crate training requires a crate that caters to the size of your dog. Put the crate in a good place where you want the dog to be. Never force the dog into the crate as this will create a bad experience for him. Leave the door open on the crate and gradually try to lure your dog in. Once he enters praise him and pet him. This method is most effective for potty training a dog but can be used for other things too.  It is important to not keep the dog in the crate when you are not home.  The premise is that a dog will not go to the bathroom where he sleeps so he will hold it.  When you allow him to leave the crate and let him outside he will then go to the bathroom and can be praised and rewarded.

It is important, regardless of the method of dog training that you use, to remember to praise good behaviors as opposed to punishing bad behavior. This means that rather than punishing your dog for having an accident in the house, reward him when he does his business outside. It will not be long before your dog understands what is going on. Do the same with playing fetch, when your dog tugs on his leash, and when he barks uncontrollably. Make sure that you have some of your dog’s favorite treats handy and let the dog training begin!

Best way to potty train your dog WITHOUT A CRATE?

Question by Heather: Best way to potty train your dog WITHOUT A CRATE?
I got a new puppy while at a friend’s house… two states away from where I live. I don’t have a crate but I desperately need tips on how to potty train her without one. I want a crate and will get one, I just can’t get one till I get home. Thanks!

I did it without a crate. Here is what I did.
Outside every 30 mins or at any warning signs (circling, sniffing, etc.)
Stay outside until she goes. Praise her like she won the lottery, treat her.
Take her out the second she wakes from a sleep, 15 minutes after eating, and after a play session. Same thing, praise treat when she goes.
If you catch her in the act, make a firm command (I did AHHHHHH) pick her up, outside, treat/praise when she finishes out there.
If you see a mess on the floor, but didn’t see her do it, clean it up REALLY well and don’t say/do anything, she won’t understand after the fact and you will confuse her if you correct her then.
There will be accidents, they all learn at their own pace,
Using this method mine was pretty much house trained within a month, asking to go outside, etc, with few accidents.
