Q&A: How do i go about training my dog who just turned one years old from running away from me?

Question by sunluciano3030: How do i go about training my dog who just turned one years old from running away from me?
I let my dog off his leash in front of my house. The driveway has a fenced and he managed to slip right under and ran into the streets and other peoples back yard. I have called him calmly but to no avail. I finally got a hold of him when he began to pee by a tree. How can i train him from running away and coming to me when i call his name?

There are many different ways. One way is a metal slip chain, however there is a right way and a wrong way to use them. They should not be used to choke your dog. They are used to pop their neck. It knocks them off balance and the metal on metal sound right by their ear gets their attention. You shouldn’t use this unless you have been trained how to use them. You can also install the underground fences that sends a signal to a shock collar. This will allow the dog to learn his boundries.

Q&A: How can my dog benefit from training classes?

Question by Austin is here!!: How can my dog benefit from training classes?
We were at petsmart and the guy working there said my dog could really benefit from the training classes. My question is why my dog knows how to sit, stay, sit up,shake, down, and roll over. And my dog is 1 year old.
Do you think my dog could really use these classes or do you think their just trying to make money?
I don’t want to blow $ 109.00 if he does not really need it.

First of all, I wouldn’t go for Petsmart.
I’m not saying that the trainer is not competent enough, but they are highly commercial and from what I heard, you only need a 10 day training to become a trainer there.
Not to mention that the guy working there would tell you that only to make you spend the money – he has no interest in telling you that your dog is well behaved and trained and doesn’t need training classes. Instead he has all the interest in convincing you to go there.

Secondly, it seems that you actually taught lots of stuff to your dog and that you did invest time in his education! I mean, if he is well behaved and trained and so on, I would see no point in spending on obedience classes!

The training classes – if done by a professional trainer, a real one, would maybe benefit his socialization skills because of interacting with many other dogs! However, if your dog behaves well around other dogs and has plenty of dog interaction opportunities, than this wouldn’t be necessary either.

If I were you, I would take him to training classes only if I had a problem like pulling on the lead, not coming when called, being not interested in me when other dogs are around, dog aggression etc that I am either not willing to solve for myself or either not experienced enough to do so.

are there any supersonic dog training devices that work from more than 20 feet away?

Question by jamers: are there any supersonic dog training devices that work from more than 20 feet away?

I’ve never heard of a supersonic (faster than sound) dog trainer, but there are ultra sonic (high frequency) anti-barking devices.

Google “super bark free” for a device which works at 50-60 feet, suitable for an annoying neighbor’s dog. It comes with a 60 day free trial.

I’d usually get the asker a link to the product, but your comment was kind of a turn off for me and I don’t want to waste my time either.
