Question by Karen V: What can I expect from the Petsmart Dog Training Program?
I have a 51/2 month old Goldendoodle pup that is VERY intelligent and knows all the basic commands of sit, come, stay and bedtime (goes to her crate) and rings a bell to go potty outside!
I feel like she may be to advanced for the Petsmart puppy training. Can anyone explain what she may possibly learn that she hasn’t already by attending? I’d hate to spend money on training that is already being incorporated into her daily life.

It’s really all up to you the owner, and the trainer. I took my puppy when she was younger and the guy really couldn’t help me with anything because I really didn’t have any problems with my dog. It sounds like you are in the same boat… I went to about 3 sessions and stopped going… I say save your money..

Question by Cody: How do you find a good dog training program in your area?
Okay my dog is a year old and i want to go to a professional training program the reason we waited for a year is because most training programs i heard you had to be at least 16 to do and i am the one that will be taking him and i just turned 16. So i was wondering how you find a good training program? or find training programs in general? i got my dog from the SPCA

Call the SPCA and ask, the one where I got my dogs from has training classes. Google dog training club + the name of the city you live in (or nearest bigger one) and you will find some. You can also find them on akc.org. Training clubs tend to have the best instructors for the money. You can also ask your vet for a list or just look in the phone book. Try to avoid the ones at pet stores as some of their instructors are pretty bad and you are in a tiny little area in the middle of a store.

When you find one, go there one night just to watch and see if you like it and talk to students there after class and see if they like it.

Dog training tools can be very helpful in aiding you to properly train your dog. There are many different types of tools on the market. With all of that variety you may find yourself struggling to narrow down your choices. The best option is really to narrow down your training focus, and that will help to inform which dog training tools you should be purchasing.

One of the first dog training tools that you should purchase is a dog collar. In most states it is required that you dog wear a collar with their tags on it, and often the dog collar is what you attach your dog’s leash to. However, a proper training collar can really help in your training efforts. Many professional trainers will recommend that you look into purchasing a choke or prong collar. You should only have pieces of food that are about the size of a dime to reward your dog with. Not only will those small bites help to keep your dog focused on what they are doing, but it will also keep your dog food bills within reason.

Though toys are not essential dog training tools they can be incredibly helpful in the process. Your dog, especially if they are a puppy, is going to need a break at times from the training. Toys can really help you to give your dog a break. By letting your dog play with a toy for a few minutes will allow them to take a quick break so that they can work off any excess energy. Additionally, you can incorporate the use of a toy to help you work on some skills with your dog. For example, when you are working on the stay command or the come command you can bring their favorite toy out to function as a distraction during the training process.

What about using additional training tools like a clicker or an electric shock collar? If you learn the proper basic dog training methods, there is absolutely no need for a shock collar. Some of the other tools can be handy and you will need to decide on an individual basis if they are right for you and your dog.

The most important thing is to find a method that both you and your dog can enjoy together and a method that gets results. Both you and your dog will live a happier and safer life with proper dog training.

i have a dog, she’s about 3 years old now, and sadly she was never trained. she understands sit, but only sometimes does it. she pulls on the leash, constantly tries to run away, jumps up on everyone, and if i took her off the leash in public she would never come back.

any ideas of a training video or website i could use to spare myself the $125 on a class?

So far, I am not finding a straightforward website that will allow me to find local therapy dog training programs.

I know I need to first determine if he has aptitude for this line of work.

If he has aptitude for it, I would like him to be able to visit nursing homes for example but he has to obtain credentials from a program first.
