Question by snowprincess1313: Anyone ever heard of this type of dog training?
The woman whose place we kennel our puppy at recommended a training book that could help us. The author is Jan Fennell, and she is another modern “dog whisperer”. She’s written several books, but the ones the lady recommended to us are called “The Dog Listener” and “The Practical Dog Listener”.

In these books she features a type of training called Amichien bonding. I won’t go in depth on it now but here is a site describing what it is:

I was wondering if any of you had tried this form of training and if it worked for you? I am about to implement it with my samoyed.
To Retired: I’m not trying to get anyone to buy this book- I was just wondering how people’s experiences with this form of training were. The link was included for informational purposes. Read the whole question please.

Question by Jen: the more i read about dog training, the more confused i get! what’s the best known approach to training a dog?
i watch cesar on tv-that makes sense, i’ve read many books on”positive only” approaches-that makes sense too. i have tried both clicker training and cesar’s way. i feel very confused. and opinions are strong and dogmatic(no pun intended) in both “camps”. meanwhile, my dog still has problems. one “way” seems to work for some things, another for others.

Really – it depends on the dog! There is no right way for every dog. Personally – I use positive only when first training a new skill (or for something like agility), but corrections (which can be as simple as not getting the toy or treat) when proofing the behaviour.

In the early days of training you should reward your dog every time he performs a task well. Once he masters a cue, occasional verbal praise is enough to motivate him.

You can use several ways to reward your dog. You can give him treats or toys, physical affection or simply verbal praise. The trick is to find out what he likes. It can then be used to reinforce desired behavior.

In case your dog is not performing on cue, you should ignore his willfulness. If he continues to disobey you can penalize him, but never punish him. Penalties may include anything that your dog does not like. These include a mild leash jerk, not moving when he wants to run etc. But you should not use pain as a punishment.

One major principle to remember while using positive reinforcement is that desired behavior should be rewarded at once and every time it is performed well. If you allow time to lapse between the action and the praise, your dog will be confused as to why exactly you are praising him. Always reward or praise your dog for doing what is told correctly. This is something you must do consistently when training your dog. Rewarding can include just giving praise, petting him, or even just giving him food.

Never punish or scold your dog during training as this can create negative feeling in your dog. Punishment can lead to aggression and other behavior problems. Instead use positive dog training which consists of ignoring a dogs bad behavior and rewarding the good behavior. Positive dog training puts the attention on what the dog is doing right.

You can penalize your dog when he does something that he shouldn’t. Don’t confuse the word ‘penalize’ with ‘punish’. An example of a penalty could be a jerk on his leash when he starts to stray on a walk. Training your dog should also be fun for you and your dog, it does not have to be such and ordeal each day. Also do not forget to reward your dog and yourself for all the “hard” work you both enjoyed! It should be fun for you and your dog, and not have to be hours and hours each day, it can just may be 5 minutes or so.
